Salinas is currently the largest city in Monterey County with a population of 148, 350 and is located a mere eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. The mouth of the Salinas River lies approximately ten miles west-northwest from the city. It is about 52 feet above sea level. This suburban city has the nickname of “Salad Bowl of the United States” because 80% of all the lettuce produced in the states is produced here.
There is a large variety of housing to be found in Salinas for all income levels. It has everything from low level apartments to luxury homes, depending on the area.
Because of the extremely mild climate, the floral industry along with vineyards thrive here. The city is known for its agricultural focus. It was also the birthplace of John Steinbeck, who has since won a Nobel Prize in Literature. Many of his novels were set or inspired in the city.
The average temperature in summer is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which lowers to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Winter is about ten degrees lower, with an average of 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 30 degrees Fahrenheit at night. The precipitation averages around 14.4 inches of rain per year.
The economy is split with about 54.6% of jobs being blue collar and 45.4% white collar. The top two occupation sectors are sales and office (24%) and management, profession, and related occupations (21.4%), Following that are farming, fishing and forestry (14.4%) and production, transportation and material moving occupations (14.4%). Only 9.1% of the population worked in construction and maintenance. However, many people believe this number is skewed. These numbers do not include farm workers who migrate and work for around nine months of the year.
Local agriculture companies, such as Taylor Farms, Tanimura & Antle, and D’Arrigo Bros. employee a large percent of the population, as do other companies such as Fresh Express and HSBC.
